Benjamin V. Rodriguez
Graduated June 1996
CNA/MA

My name is Benjamin V. Rodriguez and I attended Gary Job Corps Center from November 1995 to June 1996. I have great appreciation for what Gary has done for me. I met my wife there, we served as orientation leaders for the orientation dorm and we loved meeting new students every week. We have fond memories of our time spent preparing for our future together that we travel to Gary every so often to rekindle our youth. After Gary, I furthered my education by receiving certification in medical billing & coding and currently I am employed by a Fortune 500 company. My wife & I are living the American dream, we have 3 lovely children, we recently purchased a house and if God’s willing we’re going to Disney Land later this summer, with our kids of course.

Message to the current students:

Do not take your eye off your goal. We might come across obstacles in our path but with faith, we will achieve our destination.
God Bless our Troops!

William R. Ramos
Graduated June 2004
Culinary Arts and GED

Hey whats going on everyone. This William R. Ramos. Many of you remember me as the pool shark there at Gary. I graduated Gary with my GED and culinary arts certificate. Shortly after Job Corps, I was accepted to one of the top culinary school in the US, Le Cordon Bleu Texas Culinary academy. Money was an issue so I am now working at QVC. I am going to attend the center for the food of Americas here in San Antonio May 29, 2007. I will graduate in January 2008. I am getting married to the woman of my dreams February 2008.

I ask for blessing on Chef Grace, and Mr. Guerrerro aka "G" for teaching me the essential skills in culinary arts. I will make you guys proud.

As for my fellow Job Corps students, I have become a more devastating pool player. I am still chasing my dream of becoming a pro pool player. So whenever you watch tv and see a guy wearing all black and long hair, you're gonna say its "the Grim Reaper" as many of you called me.

Message to the current students:

Hang in there and never give up. I know what it feels like when you want to quit and go back home. Trust me it feels great when you finally graduate and leave Job Corps knowing that if you can complete Gary, you can do anything.

Tobin O. McDullough
Graduated 1998
BOT and GED

My story is not so much a success story as it is a life changing story. When I went to job corps I had just dropped out of high school and wasn't really going anywhere. I was always hanging around the wrong crowd and getting in trouble, and was looking for a way out of it to change my life. I continued down this self destructive path for years till one day I met a man who changed and saved my life. His name was Mike Clark and even though he was only my RA, he made more impact on my life than any education. I owe my life to him, because if it wasnt for him opening my eyes, I would be in jail or dead right now. Instead I am standing here today to tell you this story. I may not have some flashy job or a lot of money but because of Job Corps and their staff members like Mike Clark, I have a whole new outlook on life.

I was the Vice mayor of dorm 5104. I am now a published author. I am currently working on my second novel. I have two retail stores one I am currently operating out of my home. I also have a website which I designed. I am a certified City Inspector, Eligibility Specialist, Housing Management, Lead base paint and a Microbial abatement specialist.

I have survived a stroke and breast cancer, I am preparing for my wedding next year to a wonderful man who treats me like a queen.
You don't have to make millions to be successful, success is measured in accomplishments that YOU are proud of.
You can do anything you put your minds to, just stay focused and ignore all negativity. To be successful you must first love and respect yourself, never allow any one to steal your joy and always give praise to your maker. Remember you are in class to better your self not to make friends or win any ones approval if you make friends in the process then great. Put YOU first by educating your self, applying yourself, and making you a better person.

Good Luck to you all

Crystal Cervantes (Harris)
Graduated October 1999
C.N.A./ M.A.

I received my GED, CNA and CMA at Job corps.

This is my true story, feel free to share this, I hope it might help someone avoid what I went through.

When I came to Gary Job Corps I was tired and run down. I had spent the last few years making a living as an Escort, just enough to support my meth habit. I got arrested for prostitution and all my so called friends went away. I had a boyfriend at the time who did not share my previous lifestyle. My brother went to Job Corps up north so I knew a little. I knew that something big needed to change. I was tired of working at fast food or a mechanic shop. I had no money, no car, no job or job skills and no real friends.

So off I went to Job Corp. I had never been so scared in all my life. I consider myself a pretty tough scare. When I got there I met people from all over the country. My roommates were very nice and showed me around. Still I hated having roommates and living away from my mom and boyfriend. I made a decision to do what I came to do and not to get comfortable . There was a small kink in my plan. When I got there the CNA program was full so I had to take computer classes until a opening came up, which took about a month. I got my GED right away. Once I got in the CNA program it went by fast. I then got my first CNA job with a temp agency working weekends in my home town. Then the Medical Assistant program came and went. Job Corp was the best decision I ever made !!!!

I had about a grand saved up by the time I graduated, I got a car and a job at a doctors office. The doctors office did not work out well, but I have now worked in a local hospital for almost 6 years. Thanks to Job Corps' training, I now work in a variety of areas. The boyfriend stuck with me and has turned into a wonderful husband and father. We have a nice house, own 2 vehicles and have a 2 year old daughter.

Graduated March 2004
BOT

When I went to Gary, my whole point was to better my life, to become somebody who I can say I was proud of!! I heard a lot of bad things about Gary before I attended...When I got there, it wasn't that bad!! With the trade that I took, it normally take students over a year to finish, but it only took me 6 months to finish A,B,and C level of my trade!!! I arrived at Gary on September 9, 2003 and had the best time of my life...I also got pregnant over there in the month of January along with some other students...I did have the baby in October and it was a beautiful baby girl..She changed my life and also help me better myself. If I didn't go to Gary, I wouldn't have this bundle of JOY in my life. I got something that will always remind me of Gary!!! It was true when the speaker told us at the meeting, you never know your family just might start out here, well my family kinda did, her dad isn't in her life, yet, I don't know if he will be if they do find him!!

If I had to do it all over again, I would, just to have my daughter. I don't regret it at all. I thank God that I went to Gary when I did, because if I didn't she wouldn't be here today. I do miss Gary a lot and wish I was still back over there, you meet some awesome people and you won't never forget about!! Yeah maybe while you there, you might not like it but after you leave it, you start to miss it later down in life...I am married now, and have another daughter who is 1 and pregnant again!!! I am doing very good and I just want to thank Gary for everything that it had done for me and taught me!!! Mrs. Marshall, Mrs. McCarty, Mrs. Olivier was the best teachers that I had!!!

Message to the current students:

No matter how mean the students are there, remember you didn't go to impress them, you came to improve yourself!!! Keep going after your dreams, never give up hope. You can do it, if you believe in yourself, others will too...You can make the difference, all it takes is YOU!!!! GO AHEAD, ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS, FOLLOW YOUR HEART, DO WHAT IS RIGHT!!!! Best wishes to you and Good Luck!!!! If I can do it, I know YOU can TOO!!!

Hi, this is Natasha and I am a grad from Gary Job Corps. I never thought I was going to make it but with the help of my teachers and my positive peers, I made it, thanks to every one. I went there at 24, not thinking they were going to take me but through grace, I made it. I was an SGA in my dorm. I started from the bottom and when I graduated I was the senator of my dorm. That kept me busy; I am now working on a good job sitting down all day working on a computer making good money. I have my own apartment so you can do it hang in there and stay positive.

Message to the current students:

To the student stay strong its not the end its just the beginning of your life so graduate from Job Corps and make it happen. You make your own future so if you want nice things, start at Gary and work your way to the top. Good luck and stay strong and positive.

Graduated April 2004
Nursing

Well where do I start? I can say that I grew up in the "ghetto" part of Houston. Nobody ever thought I would get anywhere in life, because of the people I hung out with; the things I chose to do. Going to Gary changed me a lot. I'm proud to say I am a single mother of two. I furthered my education by going to Remington College and becoming a Certified Medical Biller and Coder. Gary put me on the right path, the instructors there (Marilyn Breed) made learning fun to me. She inspired me to go further in life, you're never too old to go to school. I am currently working in a Medical Office in Houston, TX. I received my C.N.A at Gary and I still enjoy helping out in my work enviroment with the residents, but I've gone further.....I reached for the stars. I accomplised a lot these past 2 yrs. Thank you Gary Staff.

Message to the current students:

Reach for the stars!! Strive for all you want!! NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!! Believe!! Don't allow anybody to tell you, "YOU CAN'T"!! REMEMBER......Gary is what YOU make of it! Be Successful in ALL you do!

Koda McKeever
Graduated December 2005
Business Office Technology

I am so happy to be writing this because Gary has really made me out of something. It has taught me how to be an independent woman and how not to depend on no one. I went to Gary from 2003-2005 and through out my time there I really enjoyed it. While living there I have learned a lot. They taught that if you want something bad enough you have to work for it and give it your all and with that I received my high school diploma because I was one of those who had my mind made up and said that I was not going to settle for the less. I did not want a GED, not that a GED is a bad thing, but I had my mind set on getting my High school diploma and that is what I went after. I also completed a trade in business office technology.

I had the chance to be apart of the college program attending Austin Community College, and I was also Colonel of the Gary Blue Lite Drill team . Don't think I forgot about the dorms; they were the best thing that could have happened to me. When I first got to Gary and graduated from career prep, I moved to 7217 when it was an all female dorm. I loved living there. I lived in that dorm for a whole year until they moved us to honor dorms. While living in that dorm I had the opportunity of be a bay leader, laundy room DA and then moving to SGA of the dorm. Once they moved us I moved to Bluebonnet where I was the laundry DA. With all that Gary has taught me I am a successful young lady I am enrolled in College at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. I thank you Gary from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done for me and taught me.

Message to the current students

Gary is not a bad place; it is what you make of it as long as you stay out of trouble and do what you have to do, you can make it just like I did. Get involved in activities and keep yourself busy. Keep your head up and go for your goals. Get it while you can and don't let it slip away from you.

I have worked in the foodservice for 17 years since I graduated from the Gary Job Corps Center. Gary taught me that if you want something out of life you need to work for it. Gary gave me the knowledge of life, and how to get it. I recieved my GED along with two trades.

Life on Gary was and is what you make of it. For the first 6 months I did not talk to anyone in dorm 7218; the dorm I once resided in. Then I became involved with the dorm and volunteering for the dorm. Then I moved to Guadalupe (honor dorm for minors) resided there for about 2-3 weeks before I was moved to Mesquite Hall where I resided for about a year and two months. Mesquite is the best dorm that I resided in while on Gary, that's my opinion. Soon after moving into Mesquite I became the DA of the Laundry Room. Elections for Student Government for the dorm were coming up and I thought that this might be something for me to get involved into. So, I ran for Senator and won the position. I became actively involved. So, actively involved that I was asked to go for a Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. A week long leadership conference that was well worth it and looks great in my resume. Thanks Mr. Odems. Soon after the conference I became part of the Top 4 in Student Government and I worked my way up to be Governor. While in office I did various events such as Bar-b-ques, dances for the students, Halloween, Christmas, Welcome Back, Valentine's and even a Prom. The best yet ever anyone experienced. Didn't hear any complaints. I was the only student who put all their time into this. While working part-time for the Student Life Director Mrs. McGowan. wow, what an experience. Thanks Mrs. McGowan and doing Work Base Learning in San Antonio for thee Congressman Henry Cuellar. Currently I am working for thee Congressman Henry Cuellar as "Case Work Manager and Administrative Assistant."

Gary Job Corps was a door that was waiting to be opened, and I took advantage of the opportunity, that is why I am where I am now and become the successful independent I have become today, because of all the mentors that I encountered while being a student on Gary.

Message to current students:

Gary is what YOU make of it. Don't fall through the cracks, stay away from the bad apples that want for you to rotten. Get involved and you will know how Gary really works. Get to know the staff on Center. If you don't like what is going on at Gary, join Student Government and MAKE A CHANGE THAT IS WORTH THE DIFFERENCE!!!

Graduated 2000
Accounting

I have come a very long way since Job Corps. When I joined Job Corps I was a lost kid with no hope of making something of myself. It took my grandmother's death to motivate me to do something with my life. I came to Job Corps with hopes of having a better life, the life my grandmother always wanted me to have. After leaving Job Corps I did a lot of moving around bouncing from city to city trying to find out where I really belong. I ended up back in my home town of Waco and started a career working for Dell Computers in sales. This did implement my computer skills I learned at Gary but it did not bring me to my full potential. I have now been working as a Payment Resolution Accounting Technician for the Waco VA Financial Services Center for a little over two years. The only experience I had at accounting was what I learned at Gary. I am now one of the leading technicians and train the new hires how to do what I do on a daily basis. I went from being a homeless kid running the streets to being a successful career man. I just purchased my first home last year in a small town south of Waco. I make really good money and it can only get better from here. I have Gary and Mrs. Crayton to thank for it.

Message to current students:

I always encourage people to give Gary a try. It’s an adjustment that is hard to make but they will teach you what you need to succeed in life. If they can change my life around, they can change anyone’s life around as long as you give them 110%. 5 years later I still think about everyone I met while I was there and still think about all the times I miss while I was there.

Before going to Job Corps I knew nothing about computers or typing. Now I work for a non-profit organization and have been here for 3 years. I started out working in the shop and then when they realized that I had computer and typing skills they offered me a better position. After being in that position for about a year, they moved me up to a higher paying position. I’m doing pretty good for myself. I have my own car, apartment and pay my bills all by myself. I’m not rich or anything but I think I’m doing pretty good. I don’t have to ask anyone for help. I came a long way and if it wasn’t for Job Corps, I don’t know where I’d be.

I didn’t realize how much I learned there until I went out in the real world. I learned skills there that I know I wouldn’t have learned just by going to any other school. I learned to deal with all kinds of people. You don’t have to like everyone, but you do have to be decent with them. I learned how to budget money because we all know the little bit of money you get there you can’t live off for 2 weeks. I learned patience is a virtue.

At first I didn’t think that was the place for me but I hung in there because I really didn’t have anything else to do. Now I wouldn’t have traded that experience for nothing in the world. I wasn’t the best student because I had my share of trouble and fun there but when it came time to learn, I learned. I feel that I got everything out of Job Corps that I could possibly get.

Message to current students:

Don’t lose your train of thought, obviously you went there for a reason so just do what you went there to do. Relax, have fun and make the best of it. Don’t forget nothing in life is perfect.

Graduated 2001
CNA/GED

Going to Job Corps was a great experience for me. When I left home I knew I wanted to do something with my life, I just didn't know what it was. When I first got to Gary it was hard and I felt like going back home and if it wasn't for my residential advisors and my dorm counselor, Ms.Waters I don't know what would have happened. While I was at Gary I became a student ambassador, which would be helping the new students and share my experience with them. I also received my GED within a month and a half of being enrolled. It took me a little longer to receive my CNA, but it was worth it. Before I graduated I also took driver's ed, and got my driver's license within three weeks.

Message to current students:

All I can say to the current students is to keep your head up and that at the end of the road it is all worth it. Don't let anything or anyone stop what you set your goals to. It's a once in a life time chance and take advantage of it, now that it is in your reach. Don't let the opportunity pass by, and remember that you are there to start and finish your career not to please anyone else than yourself.

Gerald Williams
Graduated 1988
Electrician

After I graduated from high school, I was confused about what I wanted to do, then I heard about Job Corps; some good things and some bad things. When I arrived at Gary, I thought I was entering a prison. As the weeks passed by, I fit in very well; I liked it. Job Corps gave me self esteem and it taught me how to get along with others. It gave me hope. Instead of choosing trouble, I chose to go down the right pathway.

I left Gary in 1988 and worked for one month with a master electrician. In 1990, I joined the merchant marine academy and graduated in the top 3rd of my class. If it were not for Job Corps training, it would not have been easy for me. I've been around the world three times and I was in desert storm. I am now a truck driver. I am married and have two children.

It all started at Gary Job Corps and I want to thank the wonderful staff that lead us in the right direction.

Message to current students:

Life is full of choices, you have chosen to enter Job Corps to
enrich your life with a trade. Work to get your GED, it will be a valuable
tool in the future. This trade my be the thing that brings you and your
family from a life of wanting and need to a level of self pride. Having
knowledge is a wonderful thing. No matter what may happen in your life the
knowledge that you obtain is yours forever. No one can take it away from
you. Look at your education there as a ladder in your life, allowing you to
reach new (and sometimes unforseen) goals.

Good Luck and God Bless You All,

Eleazar B. Amaya
Graduated June 09, 1995
Carpentry / GED

Hello my name is Eleazar B.Amaya.I attended Gary Job Corps Center from August 08, 1994, to June 08, 1995. While at Gary Job Corps Center I studied Carpentry and earned my G. E. D. I graduated with a diploma as a Pre-Apprentice Carpenter. While there I also met the love of my life whom I call my wife now. We have been together for eight years and have two daughters together ages seven and three. After graduation I struggled to get a job in my trade. I worked odd end jobs making it, but not advancing my career in what I wanted to do. Well, after three years of struggling and barely making it, I was tired of just being a casualty of failure. I decided to join the military. I enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman on March 1998. I sadly left my wife and first daughter behind so I could begin my Basic Training at Fort Benning,Georgia. During Basic I was injured and barely made it through to graduate. I then attended A.I.T.(Advance Individual Training), which was part of a Basic Training phase in which we learned how to live in a field environment and complete our tasks as Infantrymen.

Upon completion of A. I. T., I was then sent to my first duty station at Fort Campbell Kentucky. I rejoined with my family where I was stationed. There I attended a military training school-Air Assault School, where I learned how to repell from helicopters and various tasks involving helicopters. I was the six mile and twelve mile road march champion and received a certificate of achievement for my accomplishments. After serving at my first unit as an assistant gunner, I then came up on orders for an overseas assignment to Korea. Upon leaving for Korea I received my first Army achievement medal.

I again had to part with my family in which I was able to see my second daughter being born before my deployment. I arrived in my next duty station on 20 December 1999. I spent Christmas on the cold base of the DMZ of Korea, thinking how much I missed my family and how my new daughter was doing. I served as an Armorer for my unit in Korea, being responsible and signed for millions of dollars worth of equipment. After six months of my hardship tour I went on a three week leave to see my family. After I returned and completed my remaining six months I received my second army achievement medal and my first army recognition medal. Upon completion of my one year tour in Korea, I then reenlisted for my third duty station-Fort Lewis Washington. I arrived at Fort Lewis Washington in January 11, 2001, where I have attended numerous Army schools. I have attended the noncommissioned Officer School, and have taken numerous courses including Armorer, Stryker Net, Driver's Course, Patrol Leader's Course, and various communication courses. I am a vehicle commander for the new Stryker Brigade Combat Team a nd I am currently on my way to Iraq for the unit's first combat mission.

I will be back in Texas in November of 2004, for I have reenlisted for my fourth duty station in Fort Hood, which is located in Killeen Texas. I'll definitely stop by Gary Job Corps Center to tell my story of success in the military to others, who will want to hear and for other young men who want to learn about the military.

Joshua Turner
Graduated April 2000
Lithographic Printing

Hey all, my name's Josh. Before attending the Job Corps, I never really knew
what I wanted to do with my life. I was a high school drop out, living at
home. I heard about the Gary Job Corps through my parents, and decided to
go, to improve my future. Let me tell you something, it was one of the best
decisions I ever made in my life. The people there really cared about my
future, and where I was going in life. I attended Lithographic Printing,
where I had the privilege of being educated by two of the best teachers I've
ever had: Mr. Robert Arrington and Ms. Jeanie Nieto. Not only were they
teachers, but they were also very good friends to me, giving me and the
other students advice on personal matters when we needed it. I graduated
from the Job Corps 9 months after I got there, in April 2000. I'm now in the
Navy, and currently working on a book of poetry "The Life And Times Of SN
Turner". I don't know where I would be without the Job Corps, but I might
not be where I am today. So, I would like to thank the entire Gary Job Corps
staff, and all the friends I made while I was there. I'm still thinking of
all of you.

Message to current students:

Shout outs to all the students in the 7-100 dorms, The Stagers, and to the
entire Lithographic Printing Class. Keep at it, it's hard at first to adjust
to the rules and regulations, but well worth it in the end. You'll come out
more mature, more experienced, and more willing to take on the numerous
tasks the world has to offer.

I attended Gary for about 9 months, before that I was just another person without an education and I thought that it was too late to go back to school until I heard about Gary. I hesitated to attend but I knew I needed a change. Gary helped me in many ways. My trade was BOT, and I did my work based learning with Sylvia Brown who was not only my mentor but one of my best friends. I graduated from Gary with my GED as well as my trade. When I started to work for Gary in the Records Department as a temp, it was a great opportunity to show what I had learned as a student. But now I am an Outreach and Admissions Counselor in Austin. I am grateful for all the people at Gary who believed that I could become someone.

Message to current students:

To all those still at Gary: Gary is not an easy place, but it is a place where you can become someone responsible, mature and educated. Hang in there!!!

I am glad that I have finally sat down to say thank you. I graduated from Gary Job Corps Center in 1989. I was a high school drop out with drug problems. My family and I were migrant workers, and we were dirt poor. I had no driver's license, no degree or skills that I could apply to any kind of a job market. I was at home one weekend and it was as if the television set was talking to me. I did not have a driver's license, no money, no skills. As far as employment went, I had two (2) part-time jobs that consisted of being a janitor and a mover. In the summer, I would go up North to work in the sugar beets.

One day, I said to myself "I do not want to continue living this kind of a life." I am going to grow up struggling as my parents did. So I met with a Job Corps recruiter and I signed up. I believe that it was the best decision I made yet. Yes, if you are a troubled kid and if you are looking for trouble at Job Corps, you are going to find it. Although, if you are motivated enough you could be in and out. I graduated and completed the course in 9 months. I left Gary Job Corps with a driver's license, a typing skill, a G.E.D, and a whole new outlook on life. Not to mention a bunch of nice friends also.

After I graduated, I attended a nearby Community College and now I am a paralegal making close to $50K a year. I stop and think sometimes, that none of this would have been possible if there would not have been a program like Job Corps. I probably would have stayed on drugs, gotten pregnant as a teenager and would be living on welfare. So since my life is completely different, I think a lot of that is due to Gary Job Corps Center. So I wanted to take this time to say THANK YOU.....

Everette L. Williams, Jr.
Graduated July 2000
Business Office Tech

I now work for Continental Airlines as an International Flight Attendant.

I am based out of NYC and I live in Houston. It's so cool to live in two wonderful cities and travel the world. I owe it all to everyone at Gary. If it was not for them, I would not have gotten this far. I am 20 years old doing all of this. God is good. If I could do it all again I would. Thanks a lot.

Message to current students:

Times did get hard for me when I attended Gary. Adjusting to the rules etc. But it is worth it. Job Corps prepared me for the real world. I am now a professional taking on life responsibilities. Hang in there. If I can do it you can.

September 1995 - July 1996
Accounting/Payroll Clerk

I was at Gary from Sept.'95-July '96. I graduated with an Accounting/Payroll Certificate. I left Gary on a Friday and started my new job on Monday at a Nursing Home. I stayed there for almost a year and moved on to an elevator company where I have been now for 5 years. I use everything and more that I learned at Gary on a daily basis. Along the way I had a beautiful son who is my life now. When I went to Gary I had nothing, no family, money or friends. I learned so much about myself and life while I was there. I made a friend that I know I will have forever and I think I might have even made a few enemies. I am from a small town in Louisiana and I saw so many cultures that I had no idea about and now respect so much. Surviving through the rough times at Gary showed me a lot about life and growing up. When I look at the REAL WORLD now from out here... Gary wasn't so bad at all. I actually miss it sometimes.

Message to current students:

Those that are in Gary... be patient and take care of your business while you can! You're there so you can take care of yourself when you get out.

James R. LaPorte, II
May 2000 - Graduated February 2001
Electrical Certification

In February 2001, I got a job as a maintenance technician for the YMCA starting at $7.50 an hour. In July 2001, I took a better paying job as an electrical apprentice. I had benefits, shirts, and started at $8.50 an hour. They paid for my first year at apprentice school and I received raises. I ended up making $10.50 an hour. Unfortunately, I was laid off after 12 months due to a work slow down. I worked temporarily for another electrical firm making $11 an hour. I decided to quit and go to college since the shop was so far from my house.

The job market is tough. I've been unable to find a part time job to work around my college hours. Many places believe I'm over qualified and cannot afford to pay the $11. They believe I would leave and are not willing to invest the time in training me.

I haven't given up and I know I can always go back to being an electrical apprentice.

I screwed up not staying in school. My point is that the skills I learned at Job Corps gave me an opportunity to get a good paying job. I realize how important my education is and I want to graduate from college and do something more with my life.
