QUESTION 1:

We are doing some improvements to property in your area and wondered if any of your classes have projects that they work on as a class or if your students have to do internships. Most of the residents at our property are low-income and cannot afford to do work on their homes. We do not provide home repairs/improvements to them in our lease agreement.

RESPONSE 1:

Gary Job Corps would love to be of service and provide student interns for your building project. We have carpentry, painting, bricklaying and facilities maintenance students who could provide what you need; plus, electricians and industrial electricians to help with wiring.

Most importantly, our student interns have to be supervised during their training day, which is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Also, we need to know if these will be paid, or unpaid internships.

QUESTION 2:

I received my GED while attending the Gary Job Corps Center and I need a copy of the certificate for a potential employer. Can you send me a copy?

RESPONSE 2:

Gary JCC cannot send a copy of your GED certificate, but you can call the Texas Education Agency GED Unit at (512) 463-9292 to request a copy.

QUESTION 4:

What type of references does a new student need before entering Job Corps?

RESPONSE 4:

References are actually the names that will go into the computer system to be contacted in case of emergency. Each student is required to provide at least four references. Each reference should include, full name, address and telephone number. References can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings age 18 or older, or close friends.

QUESTION 5:

Can someone other than a parent accompany a new student on the tour?

RESPONSE 5:

Yes, a relative or friend can accompany the student on his/her tour if there is room on the bus. Contact the Admissions Counselor prior to the tour date to make sure there is enough room.

QUESTION 6:

I am a former Gary Student and I am trying to contact friends that I made while attending Gary. Can you give me their address and telephone number?

RESPONSE 6:

No, we cannot provide you with this information. This type of information is confidential and cannot be shared with those outside the Gary Community.

QUESTION 7:

Can students have visitors at the center on the weekends? What are the requirements if it is not family?

RESPONSE 7:

Parents and guardians are welcome to visit students at the Center. Visitors are asked to register with safety at the main gate. Security staff will give them instructions concerning the Center's regulations for guests. The Center discourages teenage visitors.
