This page contains important information and guidelines for enrolling as a student at the Gary Job Corps Community. After reading this information or if you have additional questions, call 1-800-733-5627 for assistance or to start the enrollment process. This information is not intended to represent all policies or conditions for enrollment and each individual's situation can vary. This information is subject to change without notice.
AGE:
Must be at least 16 years of age. Must enroll and start classes BEFORE age 25.
Proof of age is required as part of the application process.
RESIDENCY:
Must be a LEGAL resident. Proof of residency is required in the application
process.
SUITABILITY:
Must WANT to enroll, understand, AND be willing to follow the rules. Must PASS
interview with admissions counselor, write an essay focusing on career goals,
AND sign an acknowledgement accepting zero-tolerance policies.
PARENTAL CONSENT:
Must have consent of parents or LEGAL guardian if under age 18. Signature of
parents or legal guardians required in application.
INCOME:
Call Admissions Office for complete details. Must meet federally set income
guidelines as follows:
MEDICAL HEALTH:
Application must be approved by campus medical staff for any treatment within
past 4 years (EXCEPT for some specific and minor conditions). History of treatment
and any medication is required in application. Doctor's FULL release may be
required.
BRACES / RETAINERS:
Student and family must pay ALL related costs, AND must find an orthodontist
near the campus who will provide treatment. Students may also need to provide
transportation to appointments. Letter specifying coverage, responsibility,
and orthodontist information is needed.
DRUG-FREE STATUS:
All students must remain drug and alcohol-free during enrollment AND must pass
arrival drug test. Any student who does not pass the first test must pass one
within 30 days. Random testing CAN be done. Any student arrested for a drug
or alcohol-related charge OFF campus, or in possession or under the influence
ON campus, will be fired (separated) under the "ZERO TOLERANCE" Policy.
CHILD CARE:
Students with children MUST have stable daycare arrangements made before entry.
Proof of day care provider information is required. COUNSELING Application must
be approved by campus mental health staff for any INDIVIDUAL therapy within
the past 2 years (longer if suicide attempt was involved). Treatment & medication
history, current status, and current testing results are required. Students
must NOT need continued therapy. Students with drug / alcohol treatment must
have completed a rehabilitation program, show 6 months afterward with no relapse,
and submit a current clean U. A. Students may be required to have an updated
full psychological evaluation done at own or family's expense.
COURT STATUS:
Application must be approved by campus staff for ANY criminal conviction (other than status offenses). Students may be required to wait 6 - 12 months with no new charges before consideration. NO ONE can be court ordered to enroll in OR complete Job Corps. Charges cannot be held in abeyance pending Job Corps entry or completion. Some charges WILL result in an automatic disapproval.
PENDING CHARGES:
NO ONE can be accepted or put on any waiting list as long as there are any pending (upcoming) court charges or hearings.
PROBATION:
Probation Officer must be willing to put student on INACTIVE status and NOT
require face-to fact visits during enrollment.
FINES AND HOURS:
Everything must be done BEFORE anyone can be accepted and put on any waiting list, in one of the following ways:
ZERO TOLERANCE:
All students must sign a form promising to follow Job Corps' "ZERO TOLERANCE" policies for any actual OR threatened violence, gang dress or activity (including writing,
pictures, flashing signs, and nicknames), drug or alcohol use, harassment, or arrests on OR off center.
30-DAY PROBATION:
All new students have performance probation B- like new employees are on a new job. The campus CAN let students go who do not show motivation, adjustment, and willingness to follow rules and set goals.
