About Us

What We Do

Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit our Official Public Web Site.

At Gary Job Corps Center, we support the Job Corps program's mission of teaching eligible young people the skills they need to become employable and independent and placing them in meaningful jobs or further education.

Who We Are

Gary Job Corps Center is overseen by the Dallas Regional Office of Job Corps and is operated by Management and Training Corporation. Our Center Director is Lonnie Hall. For additional staff information, please see our Center Staff page.

Our History

Gary Job Corps, located in San Marcos, Texas, first opened on March 4, 1965. On November 20, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson made an announcement to his alma mater, Southwest Texas State University (present day Texas State University), telling his audience: "I would like to establish a Job Corps camp to train between 1,000 and 2,000 young men in the skills which will make it possible for them to contribute to the prosperity of the community, and to ultimately become leaders of their fellow men."

With Johnson’s announcement, the former Gary Army Air Field, which had been deactivated a few years previously, transitioned from air base to a career technical training facility. Barracks and buildings were converted to dormitories, classrooms, career technical training shops, and offices. By March 1965, Gary Job Corps was ready to receive its first students - all male. Today, Gary Job Corps is the largest Job Corps center in the United States. It is situated on 775 acres and is the home for up to 1660 male and female students.

Gary Job Corps offers the largest GED program in the state of Texas. Students can obtain their high school diploma via the Internet and acquire an accredited Texas high school diploma through the A. Edward Gary High School.

Our center offers over 20 career technical training opportunities ranging from health occupations and business technology to computer related professions. Other career technical training opportunities include construction, manufacturing, human services, and correctional and security officer training. We also offer career technical training with the Transportation and Communication Union (TCU).

In 1978, our center began assisting students in attending Austin Community College and Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas. That program has grown, and Gary students are now enrolled at Texas State University in San Marcos, Austin Community College in Austin, and St. Philip's College in San Antonio.

In its 45+ year history, Gary Job Corps Center has undergone many changes physically and philosophically, but its mission has remained the same - to provide quality career technical training and education to young people.
